Are We Shadows?

We Are

Shadows...

Draping the world in a formless gray
Of rain-cloud stories that promise
Storms--the cold and heat swirling
Until they collide, twisting the
Hearts and minds of the people

Into darkness.

She beckons:
"Come inside, and take a look,"
The drapes parting to show a glimpse
Of a hell that man has made
With lies--false words
That can never be taken back;
Apologies are too late.

And some speculate...

That they were spoken with intent--
Truth was known but overlooked
For greed, or thoughtless cruelty;
How could it not be known?--after all....
Believing the worst--choosing to fear--
It's easier than wading through
The arguments--trying to find

Common ground.

"It's complicated."
It always is; there's nothing simple
Any more; it's a web,
And the spider's waiting--
Just waiting until we become
So wrapped up in intricacies
That its work is done for it.
It only needs to tend to the broken threads.

And so... shadows--

The places we neglect,
The places we can no longer see
Because it's easier to shine the light
On ourselves--to become blind,
Willingly, so that we might seem

Beautiful

In our futile struggle.

I get frustrated sometimes, looking at the news--seeing how politics has become a game of chess in which we can make any move into something that benefits our own beliefs--either for or against whatever is occurring.  It saddens me that I am either so naïve, or the rest of the world is so jaded, that when I look at a news story about what someone did, I want to see the good it was meant to inspire instead of evils that it supposedly created.

Does anyone truly want to do evil things?  I want to believe that isn't the case.  But then why do so many people, quite easily, believe it?  Maybe it's because of people like Erin Brokovich who show us that we, as people, do bad things to one another--that we think we'll get away with it.

I want to share with you one of her most recent interviews.

Problems exist no matter what political affiliation we ascribe to, and if we stop looking at the problems simply because they don't fit in with our ideals or beliefs, then I think we are doing a disservice to our fellow humans.

I wrote above that things are complicated; very often, they are.  And we, as people, tend to get bogged down in the minute details--often to the detriment of others around us.  We can't forget that we're trying to solve a problem--that our details belong to a bigger picture.  Otherwise, we might fall prey to the spiders in the web--the people who don't care about whether or not the problem is fixed--only that the broken threads are re-woven.

Please don't hide from the problems any more--don't let yourself be wrapped up in your beautiful world of lies.  Don't let the struggle be a futile one.  Speak up; change something.  Make the shadows of who we are disappear.

One last video to send you off for the day--This Week at NASA.  They don't have it up on their YouTube page yet, but you can get the full episode by clicking on the "View Now" button.

It never ceases to amaze me how much we are dedicated to learning, growing, and understanding the universe in which we live.  It makes my heart a little lighter knowing that we are striving to shine our lights into the darkness of space in the hope that we will find out something more about ourselves.

Have a good weekend, everyone.  I'll see you on Monday!
